Couples and Family Psychoanalysis in Northern Kentucky
Couples & Marital Treatment
Psychoanalytic couples treatment examines the deeper emotional dynamics operating within intimate relationships, including recurring conflict, emotional withdrawal, dependency, resentment, betrayal, failures of recognition, and chronic instability between partners.
Particular attention is given to how unconscious expectations, developmental histories, attachment injuries, and longstanding emotional vulnerabilities become enacted within the couple relationship itself.
Rather than reducing marital conflict to communication deficits alone, psychoanalytic treatment seeks to understand the emotional meaning of repetitive relational struggles and the unconscious emotional systems organizing the relationship.
Dr. Washam works with couples confronting chronic conflict, emotional polarization, infidelity, betrayal trauma, emotional disengagement, intimacy difficulties, attachment insecurity, parenting conflict, divorce contemplation, post-affair reconstruction, and long-standing resentment.
Treatment emphasizes emotional understanding, psychological accountability, and deeper recognition of the internal dynamics shaping the relationship.
Family Treatment
Family treatment requires careful attention to the emotional organization of the family system as a whole. Conflicts within families are rarely confined to a single person. They often reflect longstanding patterns of attachment, resentment, loyalty, disappointment, emotional injury, and unconscious repetition.
Dr. Washam works with families experiencing alienation, estrangement, chronic conflict, parent-child rupture, emotional cutoff, marital spillover into parenting, adult-child conflict, and complex intergenerational dynamics.
The purpose of family treatment is not simply to reduce overt conflict, but to help family members understand the emotional meanings, loyalties, injuries, and fears that sustain repetitive relational breakdown.
When clinically appropriate, Dr. Washam provides thoughtful responsiveness between sessions, particularly during periods of significant emotional strain, marital crisis, or family-system disruption. This concierge-level continuity of care is included within his practice philosophy and is not billed as a separate premium service.
